How to Replace a Wall-Mounted Light Fixture

What Tools You Need:

  • Non-contact circuit tester
  • Screwdriver
  • Electric Drill
  • New wall sconce light fixture
  • Wire connectors (wire nuts)

Replacing a wall-mounted light fixture is a relatively simple DIY project that can be done with a few basic tools and some electrical know-how. Here are the steps to follow:

Turn off the power to the existing fixture by switching off the circuit breaker that controls it.

Remove the old fixture by unscrewing the mounting screws or nuts that hold it in place. If the fixture is particularly heavy, it may be necessary to have a helper support it while you disconnect the wires.

Once the old fixture is removed, you should see the electrical box that it was attached to. Inspect the box to make sure it is in good condition and securely mounted to the wall. If the box is damaged or not securely attached, you may need to replace it before installing the new fixture.

Check the wiring in the box to make sure it is in good condition and properly connected. If the wiring is frayed, corroded, or otherwise damaged, you should replace it before installing the new fixture.

Connect the wires from the new fixture to the wires in the electrical box. Typically, you will need to connect the black or red wire from the fixture to the black or red wire in the box, the white wire from the fixture to the white wire in the box, and the green or bare wire from the fixture to the green or bare wire in the box. Use wire connectors to secure the connections, and wrap the connections with electrical tape for added safety.

Attach the new fixture to the mounting bracket or plate that is attached to the electrical box. Make sure the fixture is level and securely attached.

Turn the power back on and test the new fixture to make sure it is working properly.

That's it! With these simple steps, you can replace a wall-mounted light fixture and give your room a fresh new look. However, if you are unsure about any part of the process, or if you have any doubts about your ability to complete the job safely, it's always best to consult a licensed electrician.
